The Light of the World

While the debate on "abrupt" endings vs. "short" endings continues in the comments of the previous blog, I have something different on my mind tonight. This weekend I have spent a lot of time with a lot of friends. I have been out at Insanity for Humanity quite a bit watching the men of Gamma Sigma Phi play softball for 60 hours in order to raise awareness and money ($68,000 is their goal) for Habitat for Humanity here in Abilene. I have also been out to J Red's soccer game, hung out in the dorm, to the Shades show with 2 of my roommates to watch my other roommate perform, to early service at Highland, back to Insanity to watch the men play the last 20 min of the 60 hour game, to walk Russell street, to volleyball practice, to the AKO officer meeting and now I find myself sitting here reflecting on one conversation I had this weekend.

While listening to music last night we started talking about how there were songs that we just really like. I mentioned wish I had the voice of Allison Krauss and wishing I were back in high school so there would be talent shows and choir performances where I could sing some of the songs that I really like these days. That would be nice but ya know, this is now and I am here and I wouldn’t trade a minute of my life experience to go back. There are things I wish I had done and courage I wish I had had to step out onto limbs but maybe it wasn't a lack of courage but rather the voice of God telling me "not yet."

On my way to church this morning I was listening to FFH, my Sunday morning music here in Abilene, and this song called Millionaire came on. Here are the words.

Millionaire (FFH)

I may never be the reason
That people come from miles around
Just to hear that beautiful sound
I may never see the season
Where people love to hear me speak
And everybody wants to be me

Dare I go where I can't see?
And if I do will You go with me
Maybe it's time that I just learn to believe

That I may never be a millionaire
Funny I don't think I care
I May never see the Mountain View
I guess I don't need to
I may never drive a fancy car
Or be a movie star
But I'll be, I'll be, the light of the world

I may never hold the answers
To the questions of philosophy
Or even understand what that means
And I may never cure the cancer
That seems to run our busy lives
I guess that I'll just join in the fight

Dare I go where I can't see?
And if I do will You go with me
Maybe it's time that I just learn to believe

I may never be a hero
Or set my feet on Wall Street
Or give the evening news
But I believe in what God wants me to be

I may never be a millionaire
Funny I don't think I care
I May never see the Mountain View
I guess I don't need to
I may never drive a fancy car
Or be a movie star
But I'll be, I'll be, the light of the world

I really like the chorus of this song and how it focuses not on what might never be, but on what must be. "You are the light of the world" Matthew tells us Jesus spoke these words. He doesn't say, "Maybe one day you will be the light of the world," or "you may never be the light of the world," but "you ARE the light of the world!" WOW! Some of the things I wish I could have done, some of the dreams I might have had may never be reality for me, but how much sweeter is it to be the light of the world? It’s mmm mmm good!

Be Blessed!!!

Mandy,

Thanks for shining the light of joy and peace to me over this past week. I was blown away by the gift of kindness the night before my test.

Thanks for your nervous support ;)

Peace
